Getting frustrated is just part of the game. If you remember from our last post, we mentioned how feeling frustrated is necessary and beneficial to your progression. If you would like to go back and read that post, you can find it by clicking here. We want you to be able to refocus those frustrations and turn these feelings into a positive motivating factor.
We’ve put together a few suggestions for overcoming your frustrations with martial arts. Check out these tips below:
How to Overcome Your Frustrations
Get Back to Having Fun – Jiu jitsu is supposed to be a fun fitness activity so take some pressure off of yourself. You’re not here to get paid, or to win a championship, so stop looking at your training sessions as a contest that can be won or lost. Instead, use jiu jitsu as a form of play, as a creative outlet, or as a way to lose weight and get in shape. Training at Gracie can be so much more than a stressful chore. Get back to the fundamental reasons of why you wanted to get started in the first place and let your training have a positive impact on your life, not a stressful one. Just know, you don’t have to come in to our gym in Raleigh and try to prove that you’re the best, or the baddest, all that you have to prove is that you’re committed to getting better and being a good teammate.
How Bad Do You Want It – You have to be motivated and committed to be successful in any form of martial arts you choose. Your teammates will be here to support you, but ultimately you are the one that is responsible for your own desire to improve. When students are prepared with a strong desire to learn, then their skills will grow and flourish, and frustrations become the fuel that keeps them pushing forward.
Reset Your Standards and Goals – Maybe you should lower the bar a little bit. You might have set too high of goals and standards for you to realistically reach. When you start your journey into martial arts, you have to understand that you are not going to be the best right out of the gate. Lowering your goals will relieve some of those frustrated feelings. Also, do not beat yourself up if you miss a training session or have to take an extra day off, instead just make sure you commend yourself for getting your workouts in, and plan on being at the next class. You should always strive to be the best at everything that you do, but please understand that each person on this planet has their own set of real limits.
Create a Positive Mindset – Look, now you know your limits so celebrate your progress and each milestone. Every time you hit a benchmark, take the time to applaud yourself. Making it all the way to black belt is hard enough without constantly beating yourself up. Having a negative attitude throughout your journey will make it virtually impossible for you to improve. Everyone makes mistakes, and no one gets everything right the first time. You are your own worst critic, so own that and focus on the good stuff. When you applaud yourself for all the things that you did well, then you are more likely to embrace getting better in areas in where you are weaker.
