Punching Basics of Kickboxing

Knee Strike

  • Reach up and grab your opponent with both hands and pull him or her downwards.
  • Raise your knee in an upward motion toward your chest and your opponent’s head.
  • Return your leg to its starting position.

Front Kick

  • Start your front kick by raising your knee first and then extending your lower leg.
  • Your knee should be pointing toward your target before you kick.
  • Avoid snapping or hyper-extending your knee.
  • Bring your leg back down to the starting position while staying in control and maintaining balance.
  • Contact your target with the ball of your foot.

Push Kick

  • Start your push kick by raising your knee first and then extending your lower leg.
  • Your knee should be pointing toward your target before you kick.
  • Do not snap or hyper-extend your knee as you kick.
  • Bring your leg back down to a more forward position while staying in control and maintaining balance.
  • Be sure to make contact with your target using the heel of your foot (while the foot is flexed) while using a pushing motion.
