The Basics of Kickboxing
Starting Positions
Your starting position will either be a defensive or offensive fighting stance. We’ll outline both below:
Defense Position
- Your elbows should be at 90 degrees along the side of your body with your arms in front of your shoulders. Your fists should be held out in front of your chin.
- Your biceps should be close to your body to where you can feel your chest.
Fighting Stance
- Your elbows should be at 90 degrees along the side of your body with your arms in front of your shoulders. Your fists should be held out in front of your chin in a defensive position.
- Your feet should be shoulder width apart with your lead toe pointing forward and out at a slight angle.
- Knees should be slightly bent and your weight needs to be distributed over both feet.
Odds And Ends
- Always keep your abs tight.
- Never lock your knees or elbows. Keep them loose.
- Make your entire leg a shock-absorber.
- Keep your body in a neutral position–neither arch nor round your back.
Hopefully with this basic knowledge in mind, you’ll be better prepared to learn and train in this fun manner. Don’t miss part two of this series where we cover even more kickboxing basics.
