Treating Arm Bar Injuries the Right Way!

Acute and Chronic Injuries
When it comes to arm bar injuries, the elbow is the most affected. Elbow and arm bar injuries are generally either acute or chronic. An acute injury is one that happens suddenly, like when you do not tap out soon enough from an arm bar. Chronic injuries are ones that develop over time from lots of abuse.

Treating Acute Injuries

The first thing you’ll want to do to treat an acute arm bar injury is to stop what you’re doing as soon as the injury happens. Do not push yourself. Going too far can make a small injury a great deal worse. Don’t be macho either, see a doctor if the pain is really bad.

When a joint gets hyper-extended, it’s also going to swell. So before this starts to happen, be sure to ice the elbow down. The most effective way to ice an elbow is by strapping a cold pack or ice bag to it with an ace bandage. When icing, you’ll want to apply it for about 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off in cycles several times a day, for the next 48 hours.

The next key step is letting the injured arm rest. That means not getting back on the mat too soon. You have to have time to heal properly, otherwise you’ll develop chronic pain and be at greater risk of further injuring yourself.
