We’re approaching the middle of the summer months. For me, that means it’s time to get outdoors for exercise and having fun. However, the heat and humidity can sometimes put a damper on my plans for doing outdoor activities.
Furthermore, the heat can be really dangerous at times, especially if you live in the southeastern United States. You really have to watch out for dehydration and heat stroke.
So over the course of the next few posts, we’re going to give you all a few great tips that you can use to survive the summer heat so you can have fun and be active outdoors. If you’re looking for affordable martial arts schools in Raleigh, Gracie should be your number one choice. Call us right now for more details about out free classes for beginners.
How to Be Active Outdoors in the Summer Heat
Hydration, Salts, and Electrolytes
The first tip we’re going to bring to your attention is that your body will lose more salts, electrolytes, and water while exercising outdoors in the summertime. So you need to be aware of this and make sure you’re replenishing them as much as possible. Otherwise, you could start feeling muscle cramps, fatigue, nausea, and mental confusion.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Be sure to stay away from alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. These options are actually diuretics and can dehydrate your body even more. Even if you do not feel thirsty, try to drink at least 8 oz. of water each hour to make up for all the sweating you’re doing.
Drinking sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade can help you restore electrolytes and salt. You can also eat a banana, peanut butter, and pickles to get your potassium and sodium levels back up.
Protect Your Skin
It’s hot outside, so you’re going to want to wear clothes that probably expose a lot of skin to the sun’s rays. Be sure to protect your skin by wearing sunscreen, and maybe even a hat. A hat will help keep these ultraviolet rays off of the top of your head, your neck, and face. A hat will also provide shade for your eyes, so this means you’ll be squinting less.
For sunscreen, choose a relatively high SPF and one that’s waterproof. Try to reapply the sunscreen at least every hour. Even if it says it’s waterproof, you’ll lose some efficiency from sweating.
We hope these tips will help you better prepare for your summertime outdoor activities. If you need even more tips on how to stay cool and survive, check out our next post. If you want to improve your martial arts skills, keep reading to see how Gracie can help.
