Hi readers, welcome back to our next post on the basics of the shrimp drill. If you’re just now joining us be sure to go back and read over the first part of the series. It’s a basic introduction to what we’re going to be discussing over the next few posts.
In today’s featured post, we are going to be focusing on the three main types of shrimping. If you are getting bored with traditional karate classes in Raleigh NC, call Gracie Raleigh. We can give you a new challenge in BJJ, muay thai, or MMA.
The Different Variants of the Shrimp
The shrimp drill can basically be performed in three different types of variations. These are:
- Backwards Shrimp
- Forward Shrimp
- Lateral Shrimp
The Backward Shrimp
In this variation of the shrimp, you move your hips away. You should shift your weight to your shoulders and elevate your hips. If your hips are on the ground, you’ll lose power, speed and momentum. The sooner you master this, the more efficient your backward shrimp will become.
The Forward or Reverse Shrimp
In this variation of the shrimp, you move your hips in instead of away. That’s why it’s commonly referred to as the reverse shrimp. The forward shrimp is good for trying to set up submissions, like a triangle. It can also be used as a potential escape move as well.
The Lateral Shrimp
In this variation of the shrimp, you move your hips in. This will allow you to shift to offense for an arm-bar attempt, or a scissor sweep. Lateral shrimping helps you to better angle your hips to give you better control over your opponent.
So as you can see, shrimping is more than just learning how to escape from a bad position. It can help your offensive game as well as your defensive skills. When you master all the different variations of shrimping, your ground mobility will soar. Then there is no telling how far you can go with your Brazilian jiu jitsu training.
