What Is Motivation?
In the first part of this series, we’re going to discuss what motivation is. The dictionary states that motivation is an act or process that gives someone a reason for doing something. It’s the condition of being eager to work, or the force that influences us to keep doing the things that we either dislike, or even struggle with.
What motivates people is also different from person to person. Sure, we have a good book definition, but the reasons I continue to train hard are different from the reasons you do. For instance, I keep training in BJJ each week for many reasons. Part of my motivation is to be the best that I can be, and I’d also like to know that even at 70 years old, I can still be a guy that can defend himself against foes half my age. Some might be motivated to win their next event, or to quickly move up the belt rankings. Again, motivation is different for all types of people.
Motivation is also made up of three components. These are activation, persistence, and intensity. For anyone that has ever tried to reach a goal in life, you know that each of these components is very important to achieving your goal.
Activation – This is the phase that initiates the motivating behavior. It’s making the decision to do something, even if you do not want to.
Persistence – This component represents the continued effort you put forth to reach your goal, even if there are obstacles standing in your way.
Intensity – This is the amount of concentration and effort that you put into achieving your goal.
Without utilizing these three components, motivating oneself can become difficult.
Hopefully the tips we’ve listed above will help you with your motivation. Join us for part two of this post where we’ll give you a few tips on how to motivate yourself even more. If you’re looking to take your training to the next level, keep reading. Gracie Raleigh might be able to help you.
