Martial Arts and the Olympics
The Ancient Olympic Games were staged in Olympia, Greece, from 776 BC through 393 AD. The modern International Olympics, as we know it today, were first started 15 April 1896. These Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece, and featured 9 sports and 43 events.
Currently, the Olympic Games features a few different martial arts type sports. These include the following:
- Olympic Judo
- Olympic Taekwondo
- Olympic Boxing
- Olympic Fencing
- Olympic Freestyle Wrestling
- Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling
As it currently stands, in the 2020 Olympic Games the wrestling events will not be included. However, there are reports that Wushu could make the list.
We hope today’s post will help you have a better understanding of the history of martial arts competitions at the Olympic Games.
