Finding Self Defense Classes
If you are interested in finding a self defense class to take in your city, first ask your friends in person or on Facebook for suggestions. You might even find that you know someone that is already taking lessons. Ask them to point you in the right direction, or let you tag along to their next class.
If that doesn’t work, try your local police station. They should keep a list of classes and instructors that you can trust to do a good job. They might even hold their own training classes. Lots of police forces across the country teach self defense classes, especially for women.
Still no luck? Then take to the internet. This will probably give you the fastest results, yet none of these will give you the trusted firsthand experience from your friends and family. As an example, just go to google and search for “self defense classes in Raleigh NC” (or where ever you live), and you’ll get a long list of facilities that you can check out.
Read up on a few, check their online reviews, and call them up to see if they would let you come by and observe. Also don’t forget to ask if they offer any free classes or trial memberships. Try to take in as many free observations at different gyms as you can. Watch the instructors and how they give direction. Watch the students to see if they are learning, being interacted with, and having fun. Try to ask some of the students from the class their take and whether they would recommend the class.
From there, talk to the instructors after the class is over. See if they can give you any advice on other things to expect and what is involved in each class. If you find that you like what you see, sign up for a trial period, if offered, and jump right in head first.
