Since it’s a new year, use these resolutions below to make a new and better you in 2017. Use these ideas to increase your knowledge of BJJ submissions, have better cardio, flexibility and strength, and lots more. Not only will these resolutions increase your BJJ levels, you’ll be a better person as well.
Focus on Your Flexibility
If you’ve ever been on the mat and rolling with someone that’s super flexible, then you’ll understand how difficult it can be to try and land a submission. It feels almost impossible to get a tap out. So if you want to get better at defense and avoiding getting submitted, spend time focusing on your flexibility. You’ll take your grappling to the next level if you do.
Here’s a great article from Men’s Health for more tips, and this resource also has great exercise ideas for better flexibility.
Work on Having Better Balance
Balance is a big part of grappling. If you master having great balance, you can become a major threat to your opponents, especially in the realms of MMA and the UFC. Having great balance will open up so many options for you on both offense and defense. Just think about how awesome it would be to be able to resist falling down, pushed over, or swept against your will. We suggest spending some of your weekly training on balance and stability exercises. Here’s a really good resource to help you get started. In a future post in the next coming weeks, we’ll jump more into balance and BJJ, so be sure to check back with our blog for that specific post.
Focus on Getting Stronger
Another way to take your Brazilian jiu jitsu training to another level is by getting stronger. We mean whole body strength training. It’s all important so you’ll need to break your strength training down into smaller segments and plan on exercising two or three times a week. Your whole workout does not have to focus on strength training, but be sure to work on your grip, core, legs, and arm strength when you do.
For more information on grip strength and BJJ training, be sure to check out the related posts below. You’ll find some helpful information and exercises that will increase your grip strength.

Drink Less Alcohol
If you’re serious about getting better at BJJ in 2017 then we hope you consider drinking less alcohol. We’re not saying you have to quit completely, but really cutting back will help your game in more ways than you can dream of. Drinking too much only hurts you and your health. It will definitely hinder your training. Plus, cutting back on drinking will also help you lose weight. You’ll be amazed at how easily the pounds melt off when you are not pounding away the alcohol.
You should also consider quitting smoking as well. You’ll be able to build up that stamina that you’ve always dreamed of having if you do. You’ll finally be able to last through a training session without getting gassed out. You’ll also be able to live longer!
Be Less Negative and Be More Positive
Stop being so negative in 2017. Put all that junk behind you. Focus on the positive side of life. When life gives you lemons, make a tall glass of lemonade with them. Always look for the silver lining. Use the bad and negative stuff as positive motivation. When things do not go your way, don’t get mad, try harder and learn from your mistakes.
We hope the last two posts will help you with your BJJ New Year’s resolutions. If you find that we left one out, please list it in the comments below.
