As a white belt, you’re going to spend a lot of time on your back. That’s why learning the different variations of shrimping is important. Shrimping allows you to escape from a bad position. This is a crucial skill that even black belts have to master in order to stay on top of their game. The different variations of shrimping include the reverse shrimp, back scoot, bride and shrimp, and more.
Being great in BJJ circles requires great flexibility. As a white belt, you’ve probably tapped out a few times because you’re not yet flexible enough to handle some of the submissions. You’ve also probably tried a few submissions yourself, but just could not pull it off. Even though technique can take you really far through the ranks, having great flexibility can make you into a BJJ nightmare. Stretching should be very high on your drilling list. You might even want to take some yoga classes.
Most all BJJ attacks start with a strong grip. This is especially true when it comes to BJJ gi training. Be sure you’re strengthening the muscles in your hand with different types of grip training exercises. We recently published a great blog post about grip strength training. Hit the jump to go back and read it. We cover pulling, holding, hanging, climbing exercises, and more in this one.
