Increase Balance and Stability With These MMA Exercises
The Walking Handstands
This is the hardest of all of our suggestions. If you can master the walking the handstand, then you’re well on your way to becoming a balance master. However, if you’re anything like me, trying to do a walking handstand will seem to be impossible at first. So for your safety, be sure to start your handstand training by getting assistance from friends or by using a wall.
Once you’re up, keep your elbows locked and try to walk forward. If you can only make it a few feet at a time, keep with it. Everyone has to have a starting point. The more you consistently practice the walking handstand, the longer and longer you’ll be able to walk.
Single Leg Hop Takedown Defense Drill
This exercise will increase your overall balance and help you beef up your single-leg takedown defense. Here’s how you do it. You’ll need an extra person for this one. Have a training partner grab one of your legs and attempt to take you down while you hop on the other leg. Do not go full speed at first. In the beginning, have your partner go through lateral, front and back, and circular attempt drills. Try to stay standing for as long as you can. Be sure to switch legs from time to time.
One-Legged Stiff Deadlift
This is a strength, stability, and balance exercise. Start by grabbing a 10 – 25 pound dumbbell or kettlebell. Next, stand on one leg and keep your opposite one bent behind you while performing a deadlift. Do as many reps as you can and switch legs between sets.
