Tips for Avoiding BJJ Back Pain

Fixing Your Bad Posture

Taking care of your bad posture is the number one tip to avoid back pain for most people. If you’re like me, you probably spend a lot of time sitting during the work week. Having an office job kind of demands it. Being all hunched over your desk puts unwanted and unneeded stress on your back. This can worsen over time and can create chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain.

Building Up Your Core

If you have weak core muscles, your back will continue to hurt. This is because your back muscles have to take up the slack. When your core is weak, your back carries more of the weight load. This extra stress creates back pain that just gets worse with time.

Be sure to do exercises that work to strengthen your core muscles.

Get More Exercise

Many people that suffer from chronic back pain do not get enough exercise, or are not physically active at all. Not being active and sitting all day shortens the spine, weakens your core, promotes bad posture, and more. Some new research believes that sitting and inactivity is the new “smoking.” This means it’s really, really bad for you. So make it a point to try and exercise at least one hour each day. If you work a desk job, take a few minutes each hour to stand, walk around, and stretch.

A Few Activities to Try

If you’re currently suffering from back pain and need a few activities that can help relieve the pain, consider trying yoga and/or swimming. Yoga is great for building core strength, increasing balance and flexibility, and is also a stress reducer.

Swimming is also good because the water takes lots of added pressure and stress off of your spine and other joints. Plus, swimming also helps to strengthen core muscles and can be a whole body workout!
