Self Defense for Holiday Travel

self defenseIt’s the holiday season and if you are going to be one of the millions of people traveling over the next few months you should be aware of the things that you’ll need to know to keep you and your loved ones physically and mentally safe.

In this two part series we’ll discuss travel self defense tips so you’ll be prepared whether you’re traveling overseas or just taking a trip to another state.

Self Defense Tips for Holiday Travel

Self Defense – Before you set off on a long trip, especially to an unfamiliar location, it might be a good idea to take a few self defense classes in Raleigh NC. You’ll be able to gain a set of skills that will allow you to fight back if necessary, but more importantly you’ll be able to protect your family. You’ll also gain the confidence that comes from knowing that you’ll be able to handle certain situations without the use of violence. Call Gracie Raleigh for more details.

Be a Smart Traveler – You do not want to be a statistic. The best way to avoid this is to use your common sense. Try not to travel alone and always be aware of your surroundings. If you feel like something is off, it probably is so leave. Never take a walk at night alone. If you’re out drinking, be sure to take a hotel shuttle or cab if you need to. Never flash wads of cash, or expensive items while out in public. Finally, try to blend in and not look like a tourist.

Watch Out for Scams – This self defense tip is mostly for those traveling overseas but can also apply to domestic travel as well. In some places, locals will attempt to scam from tourists. This is because a tourist is considered an easy mark. You’re in a foreign place that you’re not familiar with. You’re not going to necessarily know any better. Be sure to take notes from other travelers, and consult your hotel staff as they’re a great resource. For instance, before calling a cab or taking a bus, research the cost of the fare. This way you can compare prices when the time comes and you’re not left dealing with a suspicious situation.

Be Resourceful – Invoke your inner MacGyver if you need to. If you find yourself in a sticky situation that will require physical force, find something to protect yourself with. There are many common items that could be useful, some of which you might even be carrying with you.

For instance, a Russian outfit called M-Profi martial arts has developed an entire class based around this concept. Their program is called “MPD Fight.” This stands for monopod fighting and the developers claim it is effective against attackers with boxing, wrestling, MMA and other fighting skills, plus it can be learned in only five lessons.

The concept is based around the selfie stick, a popular apparatus that people use to take photographs of themselves and others from a short distance using a telescoping pole. Since many tourists currently carry one with them, the program instructors believe this to be a usable weapon for self defense purposes.
