Shrimping for Offense and Defense

Offensive Shrimping

Here’s a few ideas on how you can use shrimping offensively.

Half Guard Hip Shovel Sweep – Using a reverse shrimp movement, shovel or shoot your hips under and gain leverage for a sweep. This idea can also work when you need to escape from having your opponent’s knee on your stomach.

Closed Guard Triangle – Using a lateral shrimp action in a closed guard position, you can escape and effectively. Here’s an example.

Spider Guard Triangle – The shrimp is used to create space for offense. That’s a very common use, and in this case, it’s initiated from foot on hips.

Defensive Shrimping

When you need to escape a bad position, it’s not only about movement. You have to move at the right time. So keep that in mind when you’re training. Here’s a few ways you can use shrimping for defensive purposes. The most common defensive shrimp applications are used in side control and mount escape situations.

As you can see, using different types of shrimp movements, forward, laterally, and backward, are extremely common in a lot of offensive and defensive techniques.
