How and Why Hand and Wrists Injuries Happen

The insides of your hands and wrists are made up of many bones, ligaments, and tendons. For instance, your wrist alone has 8 tiny bones called the carpals. The carpals are aligned on two rows and are connected using ligaments. These bones actually touch each other and allow for different movements of the wrist.

Your hands are made up of two different sets of bones; the metacarpals and the phalanges. Metacarpals actually make up the bones in the hand, while the phalanges make up the bones in your fingers.

Types of Injuries

The most common types of hand and wrist injuries for BJJ athletes are broken hands (boxer’s fractures), broken fingers, jammed fingers, and sprained wrists. Sprains are ligament injuries. These usually happen when the wrist is bent and extended too far in an unnatural way.

The boxer’s fracture, liked mentioned above, refers to fracturing one of the the metacarpal bones in the hand. These usually occur after the person strikes an opponent with a closed fist.

A jammed finger is a tendon injury. These tendons are used to straighten and bend your fingers. When this injury occurs, it could take 4 to 8 weeks to heal, depending on the severity of the injury.
