karate lessons in raleigh Do you want to start training in martial arts? Have you taken karate lessons in Raleigh before but are seeking something different now that you’re older? Why not give Brazilian jiu jitsu a try? Gracie Raleigh is the best martial arts gym in Raleigh for beginners, but before you get started, there are a few things that you should know.

Check out these tips below:

You’re Not Going to Become a Black Belt Overnight

Becoming a black belt takes years of hard work, commitment, and desire to push through when things get frustrating. Most should expect to train for 5 – 8 years, depending on their schedule, to achieve black belt status. We give students the opportunity to move up the belt ranks actually pretty frequently. As long as you are prepared with the basics of how to present the forms, you’ll have many chances to make progress. There are some notable exceptions. For instance, MMA superstar and BJJ prodigy, B.J. Penn earned his black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu in about 4 years.

Avoid Overtraining

Overtraining your body is a real problem that lots of new people fall victim to. When you spend too much time training, your body will feel it after while. You might become more prone to an injury as well. You need to push yourself, but only so much. This is especially true when you are in your first few months. Take a few days off each week to make sure you are getting the rest and recovery time that you need. Jiu jitsu is a combat sport after all and you’ll get a few bumps and bruises along the way.

Listen to Your Coaches

Being a good listener should be at the core of every BJJ student. You will struggle if you do not listen to your coaches and mentors. Your coaches and mentors are better teachers than any YouTube video you can watch at home. We encourage you to watch videos and learn as much as you can, but you come to the gym to train, understand that your leaders will be the ones that will help you develop your forms and techniques.

Be Ready to Fail

You will fail, and you will fail often. This is not a bad thing and it is natural for every single student that trains in Brazilian jiu jitsu. There is a learning curve when it comes to being able to submit someone, or efficiently escaping from a submission. You have to be ready to work and commit if you want to succeed. After all, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

Strive to Succeed

Regardless of your athletic prowess, always strive to do your best and succeed. Your personal success should not be measured by how many people you beat, or submit, but rather how you improve as a person and as a teammate, after training at Gracie Raleigh. Having a positive attitude and always giving your best will help you accomplish your goals.
